Hi,
I am working as SAP TechnicalConsultant(ABAP) around 6 years of experience.
I am interested to change my career into MDM. Is it a good decision and how is the market for MDM. Is XI is knowledge is prereuisite for MDM.
Can any one pl. susggest in this regard.
Thanks,
R.Gopal
Hi Rinky,
Being an ABAPer will MDM be useful for me?
To be precise ABAP knowledge is not a prerequisite to learn MDM however if you have some knowledge of the functional side in SAP R/3 it will help.
As an ABAPer if you understand the table structure in R/3 the hierarchy in which data are store etc it will help in MDM data modelling as Data modelling is the initial and most important step when working with MDM.
Besides your ABAP knowledge will help when you are integrating with differnt system especially SAP and BI system .ABAP can be used to write different codes and call several functional Modules which are used to to conver data formats and in RFC connections to enable file taransfers.
Your XI specific knowledge will definitely be very helpful when working in MDM .As MDM is all about intergrating with differnt systems so as to consolidate and harmonize the master data. When ever we rae working with systems spread across difeerent landscapes like legacy sytems,R/3 sy, etc we will definitely require Xi for their integration and conversion.
I strongly feel that you do not need any such specific kind of training to attend to learn MDM as MDM is a Configuration driven tool and if you go through the different books available online on SAP help and even SDN then it is sufficient to start with the basic concept sin MDM.
The bible for MDM is MDM reference Guides
There are four ref guides
Console
Data Manager
Import Manager
Syndicator
These guides are sufficient to learn within the MDM box for a beginner.
Hope it helped
Kindlky reward points if found useful.
Thanks
Simona

As an ABAP Consultant you have to choose whether you want to go be an MDM Consultant side or MDM Portal/Admin.
MDM Admin will have MDM installations, Integrations, Deployment, User Mgt, Monitoring, Backups, Repository Archives etc.
MDM Consultant will have data consolidation, harmonization and maintaining data centrally.
You can also have these both profiles clubbed for smaller implementation.
XI knowledge will be required if you are MDM Admin and you want to integrate your MDM with SAP System not otherwise

Hi Rajagopal,
Welcome to MDM.
I am providing you what is MDM.
In general Different versions of same master data is distributed in different application systems .
Beacuse of diffrent version of same master data , our business scenarios will be failed as all our
business runs on master data.so, we want to have single version of master data to ensure that
our business is sucessfuly run.
MDM maintains single version of data using its consoldiation, harmonization and central master
data management concepts.
So , all our needs regarding master data is solved by MDM.
Is it a good decision and how is the market for MDM.
As far as i know MDM has good market.Master data heavily
used in many industries such as banking, airline, health sector
and companies which has multiple branches in multiple
locations. So definitely MDM is required to maintain the master
data in all these industries.
Is XI is knowledge is prereuisite for MDM.
XI knowledge is not prereuisite for MDM.But when we integrate
MDM with other SAP systems XI knowledge is required.
To learn MDM, XI is not required.

The basic reference guides in MDM are Console , Data Manager , Import Manager and Syndicator.
Having knowledge on relational database concepts would be useful to learn MDM.Though you don't have knowledge on database concepts, you can learn mdm going through documents.
Just go through the links provided above.
Having porgramming knowledge on java or ABAP would be useful to you when MDM is integrated with
other technologies.
Hope it helps.
Reward points,if found useful.

Hi RajaGopal,
MDM is a very hot cake now days and I feel you will make a right decision by learning MDM. MDM is getting better and better with
Since you have mentioned that you have mentioned 6 years of experience of ABAP, so that will make you very much confident while learining MDM.
MDM stands for Master Data Management. Hence Technically speaking MDM involves a lot of integration scenarios. It integrates with most of the Sap and No-Sap systems.
MDM basically can be divided into 4 components :
1. Console
2. Import Manager
3. Data manager
4. Syndicator.
I would advice you to start your MDM learning by going through these 4 reference guides. Here is the link for the same :
I am also attaching you a link which will specifically help you out to solve most of your queries :
Now, regarding you last query, XI is not a pre-requisite for MDM. It is just that MDM involves a lot of integration scenarios. Hence XI is required is some of the intergrations, but that part of the work can be handled by XI consultants. Major chunk of the work is in MDM, hence MDM alone (with ABAP ) can do great wonders for you.
Hope it helps.
Please reward points if useful
Thanks and Regards
