MDM 5.5 installation, requirements are:
MDM 5.5 Server:
--> Microsoft windows 2000/ 2003/xp
--> Linux -- kernel version 2.4 or higher with the following
libstdc ++.so.5 or higher
glibc 2.2 or higher
 sun Solaris - 8 - sunos 5.8 rev .02/02 or later
DBMS:
--> Microsoft SQL server 2000 ( version 8.0 sp3)
--> Oracle 9.2
--> IBM DB2 8.1 version
MDM 5.5 console/clients:
--> Windows Xp, 2000, 2003 all versions
MDM 5.5 API's:
--> COM
--> JAVA
Desktop Publishing:
--> Quark Express (windows and Macintosh)
--> Adobe In Design (windows and Macintosh)
Installation: MDM 5.5 console/clients:
--> Windows Xp, 2000, 2003 all versions
1.First we have to maintain Database server.(Sql 2000, Oracle 9i)
2. We have to install MDM Server.
3. After that install GUI clients.
3.1. Console
3.2.Importmanager
3.3.Datamanger
3.4.Syndicator
4. Import manager Batch server, Syndication Batch server.
5. Next coming to repositories go to Business content folder And select repositories .
6.Program files --> sap MDM 5.5 --> Server > Archives> Put the repositories.
7. In Console Mount the MDM server.
8. Unachieve the repositories based upon Requirement

MDM is very new in market. As the total business process rely on it and standard and Qualified master data is very much essential for smooth running of business process So,I thik after few years it will be used by most of the Industries.
Future of MDM Consultant is bright.
Yes there are some real time scenario which you can practice.
IF you have already installed MDM tool( Data Manager, Import Manager and conole). Then u can practice lot of things.
In cosole you can create repository, ARCHAIVE AND UNARCHIVE IT.You can create table field and lots of thing.
In data manager you can create Rule, strategies, tranformation and search criterian and edit different records etc.
In import manager you can create map.

How will be future for MDM ?
As far as i know , MDM has good market .Masterdata is heavily used in many industries such as
banking , healthcare, airline and industies which have multiple braches in various locations.
and also MDM can be integrated to all other SAP Netweaver components(Portal,BI and XI).
To manage the master data across various application systems, MDM is required.
So, Definitely you will have good opportunities on MDM.

There are basic reference guides in MDM :
1) MDM Console
2) MDM Data Manager
3) MDM Import Manager
4) MDM Syndicator
Besides those basic topics, MDM contains Global Data Synchorinization , Rich Product level
Management and Integration with other Netweaver Component(XI,BI and Portal).
I don't know your background knowledge.If you are good at relational database concept , you will feel
comfortable learning MDM.
Though you are new to the database concepts, you can learn MDM going through documents , links
articles provided in SDN.

1. MDM is very new to the market and it is getting stabilised with its every newer version. Companies are now started paying attention towards their Master Data and hence MDM will be a very good field to be in. You will have a bright future ahead.
2. Regarding Learning MDM, many people are now a days keen on learing MDM. We always guide them to start self-study.

- MDM is a Hot area to work with as many company now are having problems with their master data becuse of the growing numbers of customers and vendor as wel; as other masters in every areas.Managing Master data is becoming an issue and so MDM has stepped in.There are many master data mangement tools in the market but as SAP MDM is an SAP developed and promoted Software it has an Edge over others .Besides SAP is devoping it better with every version.
So MDM prospects will definitelt be brighter in the near future.

Besides you do not need any prerequisites to learn MDM as it is a configuration driven tool.You can go through the four bible of MDM which will give you a good start in learning .

- To be honest MDM is now in its initial stages where it is trying to make a mark and come to the level of other stabilized Master data mangement tool.
but however mDM is growing and developing at a very fast rate.SAP is coming with a better and Improved vs everytime.
After SAP MDM vs 7.1 will be out MDM will highly stablized and then boom in the market.
If you wnat to enter this hot area you need to be prepared well inadvance.
so i feel its not a bad idea to start learning with MDm so taht when it hitrs the market you are the best in it.
