Dear Goutham

Assume you are manufacturing some 20 products in a plant. There will be some production lot say 5 nos.which we can call as one production lot. This production lot will be batch lot. In case of serial number, you will assign a serial number for each and every 5 nos.

In short, batch can be referred to couple of materials whereas, serial number refers to one piece of material.

thanks

Hi,

usually in Process Industries they are using this Batches and Serial Numbers.

Batches are using for group of products,

Serial Numbers are using for individual product.

for example we have one batch like X, It contains 1000 units.

here we can define individual serial number for 1000 units,

her one batch contrains 1000 serial numbers.

I guess this is useful for you.

with regards,

sathya.

HI Goutham,

Serial Number: is nothing but normal numbering to uniquely identify every single piece of product.

Say in mobile industry every mobile has unique IMSI number that can be thought of as its serial number.

Given a serial number you can pin point the particular piece of product.

Batch Number:

Is Nothing but combining the products produced under certain conditions in a batch.

For Example in Oil industry if we talk about 2T oil etc the viscosity, Density etc are quite important.

Now due to slight variations in production the Viscosity Density would not be exactly same for 2 different lots.

So we maintain Batch where we put classification Criteria in Classification view in Material Master.

If the criteria are for example Viscosity and density

Batch1 could be Viscosity=100 density=10

Batch2 Could be Viscosity=110.5 Density=9.71

So while selling by knowing Batch number we can tell the customer about the properties.

Also you would have heard about recall of all the vehicles of Batch so and so from toyota.

Recently Nokia called off all the Batteries BL-5C batteries of a batch.

The reason is they were all manufactured at one time and hence since one of them had that error all would have had the same. So the whole batch can be recalled.

Hi,

Batch:

Batch is a Number which is assigned to a Production lot and the lot size containing the individual Products Manufactured with a Particular Production Recipe. The Products which belongs to Batch are expected to be having exactly the same Properties.

The Identification of a Batch is very important for the Pharmaceutical Industry due to the Regulations set down by the FDA in the US. and other regulatory bodies across the world, such as the Drugs controller General of India (DGI).

Serial Numbers:

This helps component to identify and differentiate between individual items of material. This component therefore ideally supplements the material master record, which may contain all data for describing and managing a piece of material, but which does not enable you to differentiate between individual items of that material.

Example The Computer Monitor will have serial numbers which will help to identify the product(equipment) and type location.

Award points if help ful.

Thanks

Hi Goutham,

Batch Numbers - Helps to track items, such as medications, using their batch numbers. The batch number can provide additional information such as an item's manufacturing date, warranty data, and so on.

The user enters the batch numbers during stock entries for items that have a definition of batch numbers management. Then the user chooses the relevant batch numbers for stock transfer and release documents.

The work method is to enter serial numbers during stock entries for items that have a definition of serial numbers management, and to choose relevant serial numbers for stock transfer and release documents.

Hope it answers your query.
