Oracle 10.2 Used% Autoextend is on

If my tablespaces show 100% used and I have autoextend on..is there a need to add a datafile?

What are the pros and cons of manual adding versus automanagaged...and what are the implications.

Thanks

Mikie

Hi Mikie,

the answer is "it depends".

It depends on:

  • what tablespaces look 100% full to you? E.g. PSAPUNDO should be 100% used with 10g.

  • where did you get this information?

The advantage of using AUTOEXTEND is simply: if more storage is necessary the database tries to allocate it itself. No need for the DBA to do anything.

The likelyhood for transactions to fail due to missing storage is reduced (not eliminated!) by this.

The downside is: you loose control over the storage allocation. Suddenly you can find your database using much more space in the filesystem. This stuff has to be backed up as well - so you need to take care that the backup medium can handle this.

Another downside is: AUTOEXTEND does not add datafiles but grow existing ones. This leads to fewer but bigger datafiles which may not be what you want to have.
