Portal to XI to SAP and Reply Back Scenario - Connectivity

Hello - I have a scenario from PlumTree Portal to XI to SAP and REPLY Back. I am in a phase to find out the various ways of this connectivity. For sure , I have to use XI so Directly from R/3 to Portal Webservices is not going to work for me.

One method I can think of is : SAP to XI is RFC connection and XI to Portal is SOAP adapter connection.

Another is, SAP to XI is RFC connection and XI to Portal is HTTP connection.

I can not think if there is any other(standard/better & simpler) way to perform this task? Not even sure above methods are correct manner of doing the things?

Pls advice? Thanks in advance.
