Hi Sachin,
Frankly speaking, MDM does not need much of ABAP. But since MDM is a very hot area these days and you want to become mulit-tasking, it will be beneficial for you to learn MDM.
You will now find so many people from other Net Weaver Components who are entering MDM and learning it.
Hence I will suggest you to learn MDM.
Thanks and Regards
Nitin Jain
Think in prospective of SOA architecture, MDM is underlying database for it and will be used for consolidating and distribution of data to every system. So as an ABAPer MDM is good to learn or not, it depends upon you man, whether you want to learn MDM or not. How ever MDM has ABAP apis for you to work easily and learn MDM.
See PDF below for apis:
Sachin also have a look on pdf below:

Hi Sachin,
Being an ABAPer will MDM be useful for me?
- To be clear ABAP knowledge is not a prerequisite to learn MDM however if you have some knowledge of the functional side in SAP R/3 it will help.
As an ABAPer if you understand the table structure in R/3 the hierarchy in which data are store etc it will help in MDM data modelling as Data modelling is the initial and most important step when working with MDM.
Besides your ABAPer knowledge will help when you are integrating with differnt system especially SAP and BI system .ABAP can be used to write different codes and call several functional Modules which are used to to conver dat formats and in RFC connections to enable file taransfers.
Hope it helped
Kindlky reward points if found useful.
Thanks
Simona

Hi,
In addition to Nitin, I feel, since you are a beginner the best thing will be starting off with the reference guides.
There are 4 basic components of MDM.
1. Console
2. Import manager
3. Data Manager
4. Syndicator
Hence use the link mentioned below and start reading the 4 reference guides.
