Hello,

yes it's MORE (and not less) that what we were refering as application server in previous versions.

As of version numbering 6.xx the well known SAP R/3 Applicaton Server (SAP Basis) became implicitly "web enabled". (Not as in the past through middlewares like ITS, etc.). From 6.xx on you can access the Application Server directly

- via SAPGUI (DIAG protocol) / Dynpro or

- via Browser (http(s) protocol) / BSP

Also since 6.xx application server there is the (old) ABAP stack (runtime) available and additional a java engine.

Hope this helped a little bit...

For more info ...

1. SAP 4.6 and below don't have integarted ITS into the application server .So for accessing SAP from Web , Developers used a seperate server ITS .( Internet Transaction Server )

2 . ITS acts as an Interface bt Web server and SAP R/3 .

3. So , the latest version SAP 4.7 is Called as WAS coz ITS has been integrated into it .

If u need any docu regarding this , give ur mail id .

Rgds,

J
