I am getting following error when creating user using irj/portal
"An error occurred in the persistence; contact your system administrator."
any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am having exactly the same problem, and authorization data has been correctly maintained according to the link you sent.Any other idea?

What does it say in the security log when you try to add the user?

What data source are you using for your UME?
Data Source: sap_system
File: dataSourceConfiguration_abap.xml
Does the system user for UME-ABAP communication have all the required authorizations?

add the role SAP_BC_JSF_COMMUNICATION to Sapjsf user in the abap side. Also you might need to restart the java instance.
