Hi,
Item category group determines the behaviour of the item,Whether it is value item or free item.
General item category group determines the category of the item ,Like trading goods, service goods or finished goods.
The item category group determines how a material is processed in the sales order. It defines, for example, that pricing does not take place for a free of charge item, such as a business gift; or that inventory management is not carried out for a service. When processing sales and distribution documents, the system uses the item category group to determine the item category. The system determines the item category based on the item category group of the material and the current business transaction, and proposes it in the respective document.
When creating the material types non-stock material and services, DIEN is proposed in both cases for the item category group, because the order processing for both material types is identical: for example, pricing is carried out for both, but no availability check.
Hope this is enough.............
With regards,
Subh

hi balaji,
Item category group is to usally used for grouping of the item category
for example. if you use item category group as NORM it means that the pricing for the materail will be done normally on item basis for each line item.
if it is ERLA(used for bom materail) it means pricing is based on the main item of the bom
if it is LUMF (also used for bom material) it means that pricing is sub item of the bom.
item category determins the relevence for pricing
for example
in sales doc
TAN-is for std item
TANN - is for free of charge item.
hope this is help full
reward if found help ful

krishna

Hi Balaji,
As we know, the item category grp is used in the determination of Item category in SD.
Actually the item cat. grp is mostly relevant to Sales and distribution , particularly to the one distribution chain level.
But in Gen. item cat. group is maintained at Basic data 1, since it is maintained at client level, it can be used thro diff sales orgs.
Also it can be used in MM perspective.
Yes, there are scenarios where we can maintain these two differently. But item category is always determined from item category group.
Hope it is useful..
Reward points if useful..
Regards,
kishore.

hello, friend.
in sales org 2 view, you will see general item cat group and the item cat group. the 2nd field item category group can be used in a specific sales area and, in conjunction with certain sales doc types, enable you to process a material differently than standard. this is applicable to BOMs, for example.
let's say you created material 10014 as a finished good with item category group NORM. when you process this material in standard sales order, the system will determine the item category as TAN.
now let's say in sales area 1000/02/01, material 10014 should be processed as a BOM, with inventory and pricing relevance at higher item level. you then go to material 10014, sales org 2 view for 1000/02 and make the following entries:
general item cat grp NORM
item category group ERLA
hope this general explanation helped you.
