Why should we use BRTOOLS for oracle data backup?

Hi there,

Any one of you have any idea on specific advantages with using BRTOOLS for backup over using only Oracle RMAN?

Are there any advantages using brbackup in databackups which we do not get with RMAN alone?

thanks

Hi Arlin,

yes there are advantages:

  • it's easier to use than the command line interface of RMAN

  • it's integrated into the SAP CCMS

  • it produces logs and traces that help to analyze problems.

--> this point alone is worth using the BRTOOLS. Problems, mistakes and errors will happen. And if they happen you really want to know what happened and when it happened.

  • it prevents - to a certain extent - that mistakes are done first hand

  • it's tested for the SAP/Oracle setup which often differs in many way from usual Oracle installations

  • and of course: use RMAN via the BRTOOLS and you get all support for it from SAP. Use it without the BRTOOLS you've got to ask Oracle for help here.

Anyhow: technically speaking the BRTOOLS also just use RMAN - so there is no feature or functionality in brbackup/brrestore that cannot be acomplished by using RMAN on it's own.

I know that using the BRTOOLS may not be too easy first - but there is a reasoning behind it ... perhabs you may want to read my blog on that topic as well [We all hate the BR*TOOLS, don’t we?|https://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/sdn/weblogs?blog=/pub/wlg/6769] [original link is broken] [original link is broken] [original link is broken];

Best regards,

Lars
