Use Load Building to achieve the following:

• Minimize transport costs by making best possible use of the means of transport (for example, ship, rail freight container, truck).

• Reduce stock on-hand as much as possible by ordering as late as possible.

• Achieve more favorable purchase price conditions by ordering whole truck loads, for example.

To help you do this, SAP attempts to optimize quantities for procurement, and converts existing purchase requisitions to purchase orders for the same supplier. If necessary, new purchase requisitions or purchase orders are generated (for example, if the range of coverage is increased). Several purchase orders for the same supplier can also be combined into a load under the one collective number.

Load building generally is based on the purchase requisitions and purchase orders created in Materials Requirements Planning (MRP). You have to decide which planning method to use for each combination of material and plant. All necessary customizing settings have to be configured to meet this business process. If you want to use Automatic Load Building, you should also use forecasting so that the system can calculate the range of coverage of the stock and determine the additional items and quantities required

Another recommendation and prerequisite is to use dynamic rounding profiles (for more information, see Quantity Optimizing in the SAP Library) for rounding up order quantities to the nearest logistics unit. It is recommended that you always round up, if possible, to the same logistics unit. (for example, you should always round up to pallets if a quantity restriction pertaining to full pallets exists). This reduces the number of loads that are not optimized because restrictions have not been met. Rounding profiles enable you to meet constraints, such as a full truck load. You have to decide how to define your rounding profiles and to which unit of measure the system should round off the quantities.

The vendor for which the system is to optimize order quantities has to be an external vendor.

The vendor must be assigned a restriction profile. A restriction profile includes information on the minimum and maximum loading capacity of the means of transport used.

The automatic purchase order indicator in the purchasing data of the vendor master and the automatic purchase orders allowed indicator in the master records of the material master concerned must be checked before a load can be built for the materials from a vendor.

For load building to be used properly, material dimensions like, weights and units have to be maintained in the material master.

Another requirement is to have the right parameters be maintained in your user parameters. The user parameter EVO has to be maintained with the value “01”.

Enjoy SAP
