Upgrading the kernel on a Windows server

Hey guys,

I've recently took over a couple systems that are on a windows machine. I am used to installing and updating on the iSeries and I know it is a bit different. I've downloaded the kernel (.sar) like I would with iSeries and have it on the machine. My questions are regarding 1) the steps and 2) if anything else is needed.

I'm sure the steps are straight forward but I couldn't find any notes or instguides to get this done. Any help on this is appreciated. Thanks,

Ryan

It is a bit different. There is no APYR3KRN command, it's all a bit more manual.

You un-car your new kernel to a temporary directory. Find your existing kernel directory (or directories) eg \usr\sap\<SID>\DVEBMGS00 and/or \usr\sap\<SID>\SYS\exe\uc, copy away the files to another directory, for later restore if necessary.

Copy in your new files and then reboot the server. If you don't reboot windows holds onto some of the old dlls even though you've moved them.

Give me an AS400 any day.

Steve

That's what I was thinking; just wanted to get a second opinion. Thanks guys,

the main steps may be as following:

1. download the lastest kernel update

2. use command SAPCAR to unzip the file.

3. stop the sap service.

4. backup the old kernel file

5. replace the kernel file as the new one

6. start the sap service and check if there are some errors.

Hope it helpful.

Hi

Which version of SAP are you using ? Is it 32 bit or 64 bit? What is the DB ?

Applying the Kernel is pretty much the same.
