Hi sap gurus,
what is higher level item category in item category determination
Thanks & Regards
ram
Hi Ram,
In case the material is a product for several different component items, there u can a BOM struture ,and it is defined in BOM
maintainence .
Here if you enter the final material or parent material in a Order, the child or component items are automatically
displayed below it.
Here the Parent item is the Higher level item, and its item category is used for determining the item category of the child.
Thanks,
Umesh.

Higher Level Item Category Specifies the item category for higher-level items in sales order and delivery processing.
Higher-level items are items for which you create sub-items.
The item category of the higher-level item determines the item category of related sub-items. Mostly used in scenarios such as BOM's and Free Goods
For Eg:
In a sales order, you want to create a rebate in kind item that is dependent on a higher-level item. You first create a higher-level item for 100 units. You then create a sub-item for a rebate of one unit and assign it to the higher-level item. When you create and assign the sub-item, the system automatically proposes an item category for it.
Reward if helps

Hi,
Let me keep it very simple for you and explain it with an example.
Say for eg: If Material A is a higher level item for Material B, and you create a sales order for only item B, system will throw an error.
So in this case, item 10 would be Material A and item 20 would be Material B having higher level item as 10.
This can be done by going to SPRO - SD - SALES - SALES DOCUMENT ITEM - ASSIGN ITEM CATEGORIES.
For this you will have to create Material A and B having same item category group. And then for Material A you can set a default item category against your sales document type, and for Material B you will have the item category of Material A as a higher level item category and in the next column maintain item category for Material B.
I think this could help you in some way.
If it does, please dont forget to reward points for contribution.
Regards
Ravi

Hi Rams
This is for ur easy understanding
BOM (a scenario where a material explodes in sales order)
You will find header item and Bom items (suppose computer is header and mouse, keyboard, cpu, monitor are items)
IF you want to give pricing for Header level only the configuration settting shld be like this
Item cat group - ERLA (Defined already , relevant for pricing indicator shld be checked)
OR + ERLA -
> TAQ (Item cat for header item)
OR + ERLA + TAQ -
> TAE (Item cat for bom items)
Here Taq carries pricing and TAE will not carryout pricing , coz in the item cat u defined like that. In this eg you are configuring such that TAE is a sub item and it is using the header level item cat as taq.
Similary if u want to give pricing for all bom items and no pricing for header item
OR + LUMF (it cat gr) -
> TAP
OR + NORM + TAP -
> TAN
TAP doesn't have pricing and tan does have pricing
This is the role of item category group
You may find item cat group for defining in
spro ->sd->sales ->sales docs ->sales doc item ->item cat groups (define)
Hope i made u clear
Thanks & Regards

Services and free goods can be entered as separate items or can be allocated to other items. An item which is allocated to another one is called a sub-item. Determining the item category for sub-items depends on the higher-level item.
If a free goods item is allocated to a standard item in a standard order (item category TAN), the item category TANN is used for the sub-item in the standard version of the SAP System, and the sub-item is processed as a free-of-charge item.
