Difference between General item catergory and item category

Hi Friend,

One of my interview questions was

What is the difference between General item cat and item category group in Material Master: Sales org 2.

Kindly provide me with the answer

The Item category group is used for determination of your item category. Its based on Item category group, sales doc and usage that the item category is determined.

Normally materials are maintained based on plant. In such a case Item categoy grp is used for determination. If however the material is managed based on the distribution channel then the Gen item category grp takes precedence over the item category grp in determination of item cat.

Item category group determines the behaviour of the item,Whether it is value item or free item.

Actually the item cat. grp is mostly relevant to Sales and distribution , particularly to the sales org.

General item category group determines the category of the item ,Like trading goods,service goods or finished goods.

Gen. item cat. group is maintained at Basic data 1, since it is maintained at client level, it can be used thro diff sales orgs. Also it can be used in MM perspective

The item category group determines how a material is processed in the sales order. It defines, for example, that pricing does not take place for a free of charge item, such as a business gift; or that inventory management is not carried out for a service. When processing sales and distribution documents, the system uses the item category group to determine the item category. The system determines the item category based on the item category group of the material and the current business transaction, and proposes it in the respective document.

When creating the material types non-stock material and services, DIEN is proposed in both cases for the item category group, because the order processing for both material types is identical: for example, pricing is carried out for both, but no availability check.

Genaral item cat grp : client level (thats why genaral)

item cat group : specific to that sales org/dist channel.. (to which the sales view created)

Example :

say you have to sales org.. in one sales org item A will be NORM.. .but the same item may be used as make to order or third party in another sales org... so SAP given the item category specific to that sales org/ Dist channel combination... its available in the sales 2 view as item category group... this will be used in SD part... in the item category determination... with order type,...

some times item category group will be used in non SD part... in this case we dont have specific sales org, so here the genaral item cat grp is used.. this will be used in the other modules like MM and PP
