MATRIX property and Add Master option

Hi Experts

Can any one explain the concept of MATRIX property which has the values Master,Normal and Variant that appears while creating a new field.

Also could any one explain (in detail) the option Add Master which appears when you right click in the records pane along with the scenario in which this option can be used.
