The BOM is a list of components of a material master, this can be exploded into the sales order or not according the item customizing. A material master can have more than one Bom depending on his features, and in this case the Bom can be selected in the sales or production order.
Finally there is the variant Bom: this is a dynamic Bom composed when choosing the variant configuration. Ex: if you choose a car with 2 doors you'll have 2 door items in the bom, if you choose a 4 doors car you'll have a 2 front door items and 2 rear door items.
