B2B network infrastructure

We want to set up some interfaces to external suppliers over the internet via XI. The question is how to set up the network.

I've seen pictures about XI network zones where an application gateway and a proxy is located in the outer dmz, the local adapter engine in de inner dmz and the integration server in the intranet. See

http://help.sap.com/saphelp_erp2004/helpdata/en/fb/c2953fc405330ee10000000a114084/frameset.htm.

What are the best practices for this? Should we use SAP web dispatcher as the application gateway? Or should we use an application gateway and behind that a SAP web dispatcher

What is the proxy used for? Is this for the outbound messages? Is the proxy a SAP function or not, if not what software/hardware solution for this is generally advisable.

Thanks

tom

Is there noone who has setup the BC adapter and wants to share their dmz setup principles?

Tom,

We have setup bi-directional communication over the internet with an external partner over HTTPS. We use client certificates for authentication. We did not use the Web Dispatcher but our own reverse proxy.
