Hi

My database is MAXDB 7.6.0.27 running on Windows 2003 server. The server was taken down while the database was running. The database won't restart. Here is an extract from the diagnostics file which might help :

This raises serious doubts about the viability of a strategy based on MaxDB - an application is useless if it can't recover after a system down.

Hi Joe,

please...

you disabled the features to recover the database. What did you expect?

It's possible to do this with any other database as well. Is it sensible to do it? No it isn't. So - don't do it!

MaxDB is perfectly possible to recover - if you let it do it's job.

I disabled this particular feature after several attempts to restart the database failed. I have another database to which the same thing happened with logging enabled - I followed the steps you suggested, and ended up in the same place with that database. So, my problem wasn't anything got to do with the enabling/disabling of logging. In any event, now I have an unrecoverable database. It is unacceptable to say to my users MaxDB is a viable option, if a solution can't be found here.

HI Joe,

please show us the knldiag of the database where logging is enabled.

MaxDB works fine and reproducible recoverable for thousands of SAP customers - that means large systems and heavy business critical applications.

Backup/Recovery is daily business and often used for e.g. system copies.

What is the exact state of the database (the one with logging enabled) right now?

Is it still the issue where the database cannot be started (-9407 unexpected error).

Or are you talking about the load_systab problem?

Just to throw in my 0.02 € here:

We were and are running MaxDB/SAPDB/Adabase instances for 13+ years now and I never had any restart problems because of an unclean shutdown or a crash. We don´t use Windows and thus not in the need of rebooting often and/or cyclically.

I, however, understand your concern and this issue should be looked after, but you can´t say it´s not viable because you switched off the database´s ability to do so.

If you run an Oracle database in NOARCHIVE mode and you have such crash on a loaded system the same can happen there.

I have another MaxDB (7.5) app running first on Windows 2003 for a couple of years, then on Linux - this trouble never occurred.

I also have 7.6.0.27 running on XP and regularly shut down without stopping the db - again without catastrophic consequences.

This is obviously a combination of 7.6.0.27 and Windows 2003. As I pointed out in another post on this thread, the log setting is irrelevant in this situation because I tried the same crash scenario with logging enabled on another db and that db is just as buggered.

I can't throw out our server and get a linux one, I don't want to research and learn a new db technology, but I can't guarantee no system crashes, so I have to get a database architecture that I can rely on. If there is a solution to my current dilemma, then great, but your trouble-free history is not even worth 0.02 € to me now.

Hi Joe,

well this knldiag shows: database is online.

Why do you think it has not recovered from the crash?

Concerning the load_systab problem: Melanie has hit the nail on the head - the logon data used for the SYSDBA are just wrong.

It appears as if the load_systab was never run on these databases. Could this be the case?

Thanks Lars

load_systab has never been run because it appears to need the sysdba user. I cannot connect as the sysdba user because of what I assume to be corrupt system tables.

The database doesn't start correctly because I can't log on or none of the state information (data space usage, log file usage, etc.) appears on the dbmgui, nor can I log on the db, nor can I see the system view dual, etc.

Hi Joe,

hmm... without load_systab the database can't be installed or correctly patched.

So at least when the database was installed the DBA-Password was known.

The fact that the DBMGUI does not show the status information correctly does not mean the database is not up and running. It "just" means : the system views are invalid and need to be reloaded.

BTW: I read your theory about the corrupted user-table. I don't see how that should happen. The database has recovered all data changes sucessfully (it is online now). This includes updates to the USER table.

If you really doubt that the USER table is consistent, that I would propose you restore a backup of your database into a second instance and check what the password is there.

Can you really connect with

sql_connect dba,dba

there?

The only backups of the corrupted databases are those taken after the crashes. However, I am 100% sure that the sysdba is dba. I cannot connect with any user/password combo, other than dbm, dbm.

Hi Joe -

hmm... the only existing backups for your mission critical database that exist are taken after the crash???

Have you perhabs setup the XUSER logon credentials when the database was still running? Have you had an entry for the dba user setup? If so, you could try to connect to the database like this

dbmcli -d <DBSID> -u dbm,dbm -USQL <xuserkey for dba>

I'm giving up on this - thanks for your help and that of all other contributors.

I will try again with the latest maxdb build and see if it behaves better in a system crash. If not, I will look to another db architecture.

Hello Joe,

although you want to give up on this - I don't.

If you do have a backup of the system after the crash - could you send it to me?

I mean, if it is not too large. I could do some tests and traces to figure out what is going wrong.

Furthermore an email with the latest log files of the database could help (knldiag.err, dbm.prt, knldiag, knldiag.old, dbm.utl.

Thanks,

Melanie

I tried to recreate the corrupted database yesterday by bringing down
the server with the database online, but the database came back online
with no corruption after the server rebooted (I had already deleted the
files of the corrupted databases - this is why I am trying to recreate
the problem). On Tuesday, our network admin people, who brought down the
system when the database first got corrupted, will be working on the
server, so hopefully they can repeat what they did before. In the
meantime, everything seems to be fine with my current database.

Joe

Hello Joe,

please let us know, if you can reproduce the problem. Please update the forum then. As I'm on vacation starting tomorrow, I won't be able to answer any emails.

Best regards,

Both 7.6.3 and 7.6.0 databases have come back up successfully after the network shutdown yesterday. I can't reproduce the original problem and I have deleted the corrupted database files.

I will revisit this thread if the problem occurs again.

Thanks

Hi Joe,

from the error message it appears that for this database instance log-writing had been disabled:

ERR 51080 SYSERROR -9407 unexpected error ERR 3 Admin Database state: OFFLINE ERR 2 Rst + Trans 11 failed during redo with 3 (ExecuteError) ERR 20078 Log + Trans: #11 redoExecute committed [1] ERR 6 KernelCo + BasisError, Errorcode 720 "file_not_found" ERR 6 KernelCo + error, Errorcode 720 "file_not_found" ERR 3 Log + Log_AfterImage: type=UpdateRecord/1 isdone=no seq=0 TR11 ERR 6 Log + Action UpdateRecord.1 Length=112(32) ForceWriting=false WaitForWrite=false LocalCacheAllowed=true ERR 6 KernelCo + RedoError, Errorcode 720 "file_not_found" ERR 20079 Log + Trans: UndoFile, root:2147483647 last:2147483647 lastseq:4294967295 () ERR 20079 Log + Trans: RedoFile, root:14892 last:14892 lastseq:4294967295 (0) ERR 20080 Log + Trans: Redo log writing is DISABLED. As the database crashed in a inconsistent state it now tries to recover - from the log that had not been written...

What you can try is:

1) perform a data backup in ADMIN mode

2) perform a CLEAR LOG afterwards and check if you can get the database online.

You will loose the changes that had been done after the last successfull savepoint, but at least the database will reopen.

If it does, make sure that you activate Redo log writing again and that you employ a sound and solid backup strategy.

I did the backup and CLEAR LOG. Now, when I start the db, I get :

-24988 sql error [info state -d]; -4004, unknown table name: INFO_STATE

There are no errors in the knldiag files.

Hello Joe,

please load the system tables - either in DBMGUI -> Configuration -> Upgrade system tables or with dbmcli command load_systab.

You migth have to specify the SYSDBA user (defaults are superdba or dba).

Melanie

Getting worse here. I get

-24907 wrong sysdba [load_systab]

The sysdba user dba - I can see this in dbmgui/configuration/dbm oprtator. I even created a new user called dba1, but still error -24907.

Hi Joe,

please stop creating users - that's not going to help here.

Please perform the following:

1. Shutdown the database

2. rename the two "user profile container"-files:

/sapdb/data/config/<dbsid>.upc --> <dbsid>.upcold

/sapdb/data/wrk/<DBSID>/wrk/dbm.upc -> dbm.upcold

3. In commandline run the following command:

dbmcli -s -d <DBSID> -u dbm,<pw> dbm_version

4. This command should have recreated the *.upc files. Doublecheck this.

5. Retry to load the systemtables.

Hi Joe,

this is what I meant with 'migth have to specify the SYSDBA user'. Sorry, that I did not explain that further.

When executing the load_systab command, you should enter:

load_systab -u dba,<password>

Melanie

I've created the upc files, but still get the -24907 wrong sysdba error - I think that only the dbm user exists now in the configuration.

Hello Joe,

did you try to specify the sysdba user during load_systab as recommended in my previous reply?

Are you sure that your sysdba is called dba?

What is the result of statement "sql_execute select sysdba from dual"?

Try to establish a sql connection with this user: "sql_connect <sysdba>,<password>"

If this does work, try to load the system tables again: "load_systab -u <sysdba>,<password>"

Please post the results of these statements here.

Melanie

Melanie

I have tried load_systab using the sysdba user which I am sure is dba, i.e.,

load_systab -u dba,dba

but I get -24936 ERR_DBNORUN

I can only get the db into admin mode, db_start gets a response of OK, but the db_start command then returns a state of ADMIN.

The sql_execute statement is also not possible in this state.

I can fool dbmcli into thinking the db is online by trying to start it using dbmgui. The db_state then gives :

dbmcli on polplant>db_state

OK

State

ONLINE

The sql_execute statement in dbmcli then tells me :

dbmcli on polplant>sql_execute select sysdba from dual

ERR

-24988,ERR_SQL: SQL error

-4004,Unknown table name:DUAL

dbmcli on polplant>db_state

OK

State

ONLINE

Hello Joe,

1. db_start does start the database only in admin mode - this is how it should work.

To start the db on ONLINE mode, use command db_online.

2. You don't fool the dbmcli by starting the database with DBMGUI - DBMGUI just starts the database using the correct command.

3. When the database is ONLINE, please try the sql_connect command with dba user.

4. Also the load_systab command only works when the database is in ONLINE mode. Please try again!

Hello Joe,

This error means, that user dba with password dba is not correct!

>

> ---

> dbmcli on polplant>sql_execute select sysdba from du

> ERR

> -24988,ERR_SQL: SQL error

> -4004,Unknown table name:DUAL

This error is caused by the not loaded system tables - it cannot work right now.

If you use the same users/passwords on all database instances, you can check the select statement on a system which does not have the same problem. What does it return there?

This just confirms the error returned by the sql_connect. dba is not the sysdba user!

Concerning the knldiag from your last reply: The database was successfully started. What is the problem with this database?

Melanie

P.S.: In the future please do not copy the complete knldiag file with all empty lines into a thread. We just need the rows containing text...

Thanks Melanie

Apologies from the clunky knldiag.

The sysdba is dba. To be on the safe side, I also tried sysdba and dbadmin and every combination of username/password, e.g., sysdba/sysdba sysdba/dba, etc.

I tried the select against another db and here is the outcome :

dbmcli on polplant>sql_execute select sysdba from dual

OK

END

'DBA'

imho, the -24909,ERR_DBAUNKNOWN: SYSDBA unknown is occurring because the user table has become corrupted. It is therefore impossible to connect to the db as other than dbm.
