Hello Gurus,

Can anybody please do let me know as to why do we require External Number Ranges in the Sales Document Type?

Hi,

You can use external number range or internal number range for the sales document types.

But generally for normal sales client may use same number range for the business, also remembereing the numbers if you may miss some of them. As per SAP external number means"When creating a document with external number assignment, the user must enter a document number that lies within the corresponding number range."

Where as internal number range is"When creating a document with internal number assignment, the system assigns a number that lies within the appropriate number range".

So basically internal number ranges are used mostly.

Reward points if useful.

Bye

hello, friend.

normally, if you want a sequential serializing of document numbers, you select 'internal number assignment'.

however, there are businesses where the document number is determined from another sources, and you want SAP to present this number as the document number as well.

let's say you do service, and your field service people are the ones who issue a temporary service order to the customer. the issued documents have numbers. so when the service people come back to the office, they use SAP to create an order; they use the number of the order they already created, as also the number for the document created in SAP.

i am sure there are other scenarios for this, but this is not best practice. also, modern technology now allows you to do transactions online. therefore, internal assignment is possible.

but the greatest justification for internal number assignment is control.

hope this helped you.

Hi Sunil

Good morning

Nice question, though a real life scenario we wont require external number ranges, however if the client is using some other system for sales orders and those are converted to delivery in R/3 then we might use it. In SAP all given is not probably used always, however might come handy in some specific requirements
