Hi,
The main difference between traditional and SOA architecture is loose coupling.
SOA provides services which are loosely coupled, means any client can consume it using some statndards .
Traditional approach was tightly coupled in which business logic or interfaces provided was tighly coupled with GUI/Clients . Or clients were dependent on servers( like client-server architecture)
So, SOA provides more reusability and scalibility.
The technology which is used now a days for SOA is Web Services which makes it more Interoperable with any platform(.Net, Java etc,Solaris,Windows). Web Services works with XML and HTTP.
Hope this helps.

Piyush
