Hi
Can anybody tell me what is the difference between a Import Server and a Import Manager? And How data is imported using these two?
Thanks in advance
Hi ,
Both MDIS and the MDM Import Manager can import data from a source file into an MDM repository. However, each has unique capabilities that distinguish it from the other. When each is used to its advantage, the result is an import strategy which provides the most efficient importing of data possible.
The strength of the Import Manager is its connection to the source data, which enables its interactive map-making capabilities. When the Import Manager connects to a source it preloads the entire source file, giving it
knowledge of every field and every value in the source data. . The user can fix problems interactively within the
Import Manager and save the corrected map before any data is imported.
MDISs strengths are its scalability and automation.
For scalability, instead of preloading the entire source file into the hostmachines memory as the Import Manager does, MDIS processes records in a stream by loading a record at a time into memory. Bacscially MDIS is used for Automation of Importing records in to MDM. Its a kind of Batch process.

Heii,
SAP provides standared business Content for this like Customer, vendor ehich you can get at market place
A business content is
The XI content for MDM delivers interfaces, interface mappings and communication channel templates tailored to the supported SAP remote systems and the shipped MDM 5.5 SP05 repositories. In addition, it delivers integration scenarios that dramatically reduce the manual effort required to define the
message flow between MDM and a given subset of the SAP remote systems.
The Software Component Versions for Remote System Message Types section lists the additional software component versions needed in XI to process IDoc or Proxy messages from SAP remote systems. The Business Scenario sections list the interfaces, interface mappings and communication channel templates contained in the XI content for MDM to transform the messages from remote system format to XML and vice versa.
Hope it helps. Please Reward.

Heii,
In MDIS :
MDIS can be installed on any machine on a network. It works with the MDM Server to import data automatically into existing MDM repositories. If MDIS and its associated MDM Server are installed on the same machine, no further customization needs to be done. If the MDM Server is located on a separate machine from MDIS, you will need to edit the MDIS settings file, mdis.ini (for more information, see MDIS Configuration).
Before you begin using MDIS, you need to be sure that both MDIS and the MDM Server are running and that the target MDM repository is loaded and running. Directions for starting MDIS are located in this section. Directions for starting the MDM Server and loading a repository can be found in the MDM Console Reference Guide
In case of Import Manger :
The MDM Import Manager is a GUI cockpit that defines a very specific sequence of steps to prepare source data for import. But rather than perform the import a record at a time as with other import tools, the MDM Import Manager offers a comprehensive set of data transformation capabilities that allow you to pre-process the source data a field at a time prior to import.
Moreover, for each field, the MDM Import Manager collapses the set of all values across the entire set of source records down to the set of distinct values, whose number will usually be dramatically smaller than the total number of records, often by several orders of magnitude.
Field-at-a-time rather than record-at-a-time processing and the distinct value lists of the MDM Import Manager are together the lynchpin of its patent-pending Parametric Import technology, which supports the import of electronic source data from any tabular or XML format.
Hope this might help to remove your confusion between Import Manager and MDIS.
Plese reward If you find this useful.

Hi SAPBasis,
To import data using Import manager following is the procedure:
Install the import manager client which is shipped along with the content.
After installing start the repository and run Import Manager over there u need to specify to which repository and which file to import (Source file ie. Data)
After doing all these settings u need to do field to field mapping and if required value mapping.
And then imort this mapping the data will be extracted into the repository which was specified earlier.
Hope dis helps u

Hi SAP Basis,
Field Mapping
It is mapping of fields which are created in repository to the fields which are imported it is one to one mapping
For eg:
Source Side (Excel file) MDM (Repository Field)
Description >> Short Description
Regarding key mapping follow dis link

Hi Basis,
Both these are clients to extract data
The basic diff between Import Manager and Import Server is as follows:
MDIS:
1. It can only pick up files which are to be imported inly from the automatic inbound port.
2. Error handling is done during import (Structural, value etc)
3. Import Process is automatic and import map state is read only
4. Individual records are loaded in memory.
Import manager:
1. It can pickup files from any location .
2. Error handling is not provided
3. Import process is not automatic and import map status is editable.
4. Entire import file is loaded in memory.
Hope dis helps u
