In background job defination (T sm36) you can set the mail after completion of the job.
In the process chain you can send the mail depend on the event you set as mail sent after the job status "finished", after the job status cancel or for both.
If you are using any third party tool to manage the background jobs vai that also you can set the mail alerts.
