System Copy using SAPinst

Former Member

Hi,

I am exploring the system copy options using SAPinst for ECC 6.40 release.

1. Standard System Copy (R3load)

2. Homogeneous System Copy (Backup / Restore)

I have recently performed the first option where R3load exports the database on the source system and imports into the target system.

I am pretty much confused about the second option. In what scenario it is used and how to do it?

Thanks

Hi,

The option Homogeneous System Copy (Backup / Restore) is good only if the source and target systems are having the same OS and DB.

In that case, SAPINST does not deal with the database and it is your responsibility to copy the DB to the target system using any DB tool (usually back/restore)

When you run this scenario at the target system, SAPINST stops and ask you to restore the DB, then SAPINST rename the DB and perform the post copy activities.

Hi Adams,

When a homogeneous system copy is performed, the target SAP system is installed on the same operating system and the same database system as the source SAP system. The contents of the database are copied from the source to the target system.

Also refer to SAP Note 82478 for more info about Homogeneous Copy mechanism.

and [Note 585277|https://websmp130.sap-ag.de/sap(bD1lbiZjPTAwMQ==)/bc/bsp/spn/sapnotes/index2.htm?numm=585277&nlang=EN&smpsrv=https%3a%2f%2fwebsmp104%2esap-ag%2ede]

Also this is a helpful Document :-

[Homogeneous Copy Mechanism|https://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/sdn/go/portal/prtroot/docs/library/uuid/6945da7d-0c01-0010-1792-dd7b5d87235c]

This is an iSeries-specific method to perform a homogeneous system copy. For this method the database library of the source SAP system is saved, using the command SAVLIB. Then a new system, based on the obtained copy of the database library, is installed.

Hope this helps,
