Is the file you need to download large? Maybe the work process you are using has reached the heap limit. The work process restarts when when the heap memory has reached its limit. If possible maybe you can save your data(if this is what you mean by lay out) in smaller chunks then saving it.
ex.
When generating 1000 lines of data you can generate it 100 lines at a time then saving it to adobe format. This would require smaller amount of memory and would not lead to getting your work process restarted.
