NW7.0 installation hangs on Linux Red Hat 4 sp6 X86_64 - urgent please

Former Member

Hi all!

I perform Netweaver7.0 SR2 installation and it hangs during "Install common

system files" phase without any error in logs and doesn't create any system files and links apart from transport catalogs. I think there is a problem with SAP users and groups.

Trying to avoid problem, I dropped users SIDadm, oraSID and recreated them with empty

passwords and with different UID. It worked for another similar installation where I got the same problem, but this time it didn't work and the installation is still hanging on very simple operations.

New installation Netweaver7.0 SR2 ABAP

o Operating System

Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS v. 4.6 for 64-bit AMD64/Intel EM64T

o Database Version and patch level

Oracle 10.2.0.2

0.Sapinst version

version 701, make variant 700_REL, build 943054

compiled on Nov 25 2007, 21:41:03

1. Media used

Disks from SWDC, downloaded Oct2007

2. Procedure used

Just general procedure

All works were performed according to the notes

Note 171356 - SAP software on Linux: Essential information

Note 722273 - Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 and 4: Installation and upgrade

Any help will be appreciated!

Thanks in advnce,

Elena

Hi,

if you logon as user tbiadm, do you need to input anything? Because it looks like the proc is waiting for input.

Hi Oliver,

No I don't need to type anything, user tbiadm looks normal.

Dear Elena,

the problem you describe is very hard to solve via this SDN forum. I strongly suggest, that you open an OSS call at SAP using component BC-INS. The colleagues may need a SAP Router connection to the machine, on which you are installing the system.

Thanks,

Hannes

Hi guys,

thank you all very much. I managed to continue installation until oracle software installation step and sapinst hung again. I continued installation manually and performed system copy (restored databasa backup from prevously installed system).

I still don't know what had happened, but system works with mild permissions problems on OS level.

Hi,

just to give it a shot ... do you by chance do any nifty stuff in .cshrc of user tbiadm?

Like waiting for input via console or sth similar?

Hi Oliver,

I haven't toched this file, but there was a huge mix-up with authorizations in this directory before and after user deletion and recreation.

Thanks,

Elena

Dear Elena,

which Java SDK/JRE are you using? Is the ypbind daemon running? Could you please provide the last lines of the log files (sapinst.log, sapinst_dev.log)?

Thanks,

Hannes

Dear Hannes,

thanks a lot for the reply.

I used IBMJava2-amd64-142

I also tried j2sdk1.4.2_16 - didn't help either

ypbind is stopped

Dear Elena,

hmm, this looks strange. Could you please execute an strace on the hanging sapinst process?

strace -p <pid of hanging process>

This will tell us, where the process hangs.

Thanks,

Hannes

Dear Hannes,

the output is:

strace -p 15519

Process 15519 attached - interrupt to quit

--- SIGTTOU (Stopped (tty output)) @ 0 (0) ---

read(10

that is all

Any other ideas? Thanks in advance,#

I have seen some NIS/ypbind related errors in the past, mainly with R3SETUP in early Linux installations. The solution at that time was a

touch /var/nis/NIS_COLD_START

(OSS call 234410/2002)

but it was visible, that R3SETUP was waiting for that call to complete.

Are you actually using NIS/yp?

Markus

I tried it and started sapinst again - didn't help, it is hanging again without any errors.

We don't use NIS/yp, we don't need it

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance,

Do you have a (NIS-) domainname set? Check with

domainname

Hi Markus,

no, nothing

[root@sapsapPBI]# domainname

(none)

I had the same problem 2 months ago - I dropped users and recreated them with empty passwords and it worked and I finished the installation.

I got the same problem this time (OS is the same as 2 months ago, but updates are newer) and I tried to drop and recreate users for test system - after like 20 attempts I passed stage 3 and went a little further, but it hung on later stage with same simptoms.

After I started production installation on similar (same OS, same OS updates) server - even last workaround does't work and I can't pass even stage 3 of installation process, it hangs.

I got absolutly new sapinst patch, downloaded new sapinst-CD - same picture.

Logic doesn't work, it looks all very strange, usually I could see something in logs or somewhere, may be it's ghost or something

Thanks,

Best regards, Elena

This sounds REALLY strange...

did you ever try to let the users been created by sapinst? Delete all users and groups and give the necessary parameters (ids, shells etc.) during sapinst installation - did you try that one?

Markus

Former Member

Yes, I also tried it many times - created users/groups from scratch by sapinst, same picture.

May be something wrong with the password? It pretty usual and simple this time, 8 characters long, 1 digit.

2 months ago I accidentally gave "sap1oracle" password and I thought that was the problem's source, bu no.

What else can be wrong with users and groups in your opinion?

I reported problem to SAP support, but it is really hard to explain what is going on

Thanks, Elena

One more idea: Which Java version do you use? (java -version / java -fullversion)

Markus

Hi Markus,

I'm using IBMJava2-amd64-142, which was recommended by SAP

I also tried j2sdk1.4.2_16 - didn't help either

I'm using VNC as a X-server client and I think there may be a problem with authorizations for SAP users home directories. But there is no clear evidence that the problem is connected to VNC or to home directories

Thanks,

I have another idea..

Open a shell an unset the DISPLAY:

unset DISPLAY

Then start sapinst again in that shell and check if it´s stuck at the same place.I want to find out, if that problem is somehow VNC/display related.

Markus

DISPLAY variable doesn't set - I'm using the console emulation

May be I should try another X-server? VNC was also recommended by SAP, I thoght it is OK to use it
