Dear MDM Experts,
What is the use of promoting or demoting attributes in MDM.
would appreciate if I could get an example for the same.
Thanks.
Ashish
Hi Ashish,
Promote --> Re links an attribute to the parent category for
inheritance by the children.
For eg.
If you are having a Taxonomy as Vehicles -->> Car, Bike. And the leaf nodes ie car and bike are having attributes as Color and their values as Black.
Then u can promote the attribute of cars and bike to the parent node Vehicles. So now and record classified as Vehicle will have an attribute color to it.
Demote --> Re links an attribute from the parent category to each
of the children.
For eg.
If the taxonomy is Vehicles having attribute linked to it as color having values to it.
Now if we want to further classify the vehicles in the form of cars or trucks having attributes color linked to them then there is need to demote the attribute which is linked to vehicles.
Now after demoting records linked to either cars or trucks will be having attributes color linked to them
Hope dis helps u

Hi,
As the repository taxonomy develops, it may become useful to promote or demote some attributes.
When you use the Promote command to promote a linked attribute, MDM links the attribute to the parent, removes the direct link from the child, and replaces it with indirect links to all of the children through inheritance.
When you use the Demote command to demote a linked attribute, MDM unlinks the attribute from the parent and links it directly to each of the children. In both cases, MDM preserves all of the underlying data values assigned to the attribute.
If you promote to a parent an attribute that had been linked to just some of the children, it would then be indirectly linked through inheritance to all of the children. If you then demote the same attribute, it would then be directly linked to all of the children. If you want to revert to the initial state where the attribute is linked to just some of the children you must manually unlink it from the other children.
Hope it helps u.

Nisha
