Hi,

All parts of SAP Exchange Infrastructure (XI), except J2SE, use the persistence layer (ABAP or Java) provided by SAP Web Application Server (AS). Thus, for Backup/Restore and Recovery, the standard tools of SAP Web AS are used.

The backup of the SAP Web AS Java and the relevant database prevents you from data loss and is essential for the recovery of the server after a breakdown of the system.

You can use the backup data to restore your system in various scenarios. For example, you can:

· Restore the initial state of the system if an installation or upgrade fails

· Restore the SAP Web AS installation in case of operating system or file system problems

· Restore the SAP system data if the database crashes, and so on.

You can apply two backup strategies:

· Offline backup – this strategy enables you to create a full backup of your system, so that it can be restored in case of a hard disk crash or operating system problems. However, it requires system downtime, and therefore cannot be performed on a daily basis.

· Online backup – using this strategy, you can backup the database and the file system, which enables you to recover only particular components of your system. It does not require full system shutdown, and therefore is convenient for creating incremental data backup.

There are couple of alternatives to take a backup. The most traditional way is to zip it! Lets zip the necessary files.

/usr

/oracle (including ctrl & data files)

The total size of compressed files comes around 8 GB (the data is for SP15).

even you could import-export the XI objects with file system (*.tpz file) and maintaine the backup and old versions also.

Steps to Restore XI

Restoring XI is a very tricky way. You cant just extract and make the server up instantly. But there is no need for the machine to have oracle installed or any general prerequisite apart from jdk.

File Extraction

Extract the compressed backup to the same location as previously installed.

Registry Updation

Remove the existing registry entries for oracle and sap and run the registry file. Restart your system after updating registry.

Make the oracle database up

Hi Eswar,

For ABAP+JAVA system backup/restore you need to take a backup of two things.

1. Database backup (depends on your Database)

2. /usr/sap/<SID> filesystem backup
