questions about kernel patches

Former Member

I'm using ECC 6.0(ERP 2005),SUN solaris,ORACLE database.

I want import some HR support packages,

so i upgrade SPAM tools to the new version:700 / 023.then i import hr SP.

Now I have some questions about kernel patches.

1.How to see the kernel patch level of the system?

2.What is the relationship with support patch and kernel patch?

Can I only import Support Patches using SPAM,but not upgrade the kernel patch?

3.When should I upgrade kernel patch?

When I get any error,I will search notes, and find I need import Support Patches,

When I import Support Patches,I will find to import this SP, I need some other SP.

So I import all of these Support Patches.

But when should I upgrade kernel patch?

Should we keep the kernel newest just like SPAM tools?

Or don't upgrade kernel patch until we meet application error?

best regards.

Hi Colin,

I don't understand why you wait till error occur in your application? Update the kernel on regular intervals to avoid any error becuse of kernel level.

You can check the current kernel patch level from System -> Status & click on Other Kernel info (shift + F5).

Every SP stack contains the kernel files also. So you need to first update the kernel & then apply the patces on system.

Hope this help.

Rajesh

Hi colin,

Kernel - Set of executable files ,needed to run an r/3 instance is so far called as KERNEL files.Kernel files are nothing but executables

the directory path for the kernel in an ecc6 system is :

drive letter:usr/sap/<sid>/sys/exe/uc/NTI386 in this path u can find the .exe files

Goto to the transaction SM51->click Release notes u will be able to find the existing kernel level

reward points welcome!
