Upgrade to NW 7.0 - PI_BASIS issue

Hi all.

I am upgrading our BW 3.5 systom to BI 7.0, and during PREPARE I get this information:

"The version 2006_1_640 of the Add-on PI_BASIS is too high for this upgrade (> 2005_1_700). To avoid loss of data it is necessary to include the latest available version for the Add-on in the IS_SELECT phase. Refer to Add-on note 570810 for further information."

The current PI_BASIS release in the system is 2006_1_640 with support package 2.

I am now in the IS_SELECT phase, and Note 570810 tells me to download the PI_BASIS CD and mount the subdirectory UPGR_<REL> of the CD and specify the mountpoint in the PREPARE. I have downloaded PI_BASIS 2006_1_640 and 2006_1_700, and mounted the UPGR_<REL> directory. However, none of these directories seems to be correct and I get a message that I have to enter at least the mount point for the CD titled "Add-on CD".

What is the material number for this "Add-on CD" so that I can download it??

Does anyone know how to fix this issue?

Hi Thomas,

What is your current PI_BASIS release name.

in terms of SAPKINBC ???

Hi Siddhesh!

The current PI_BASIS release on the source system is:

Software Component: PI_BASIS

Release: 2006_1_640

Level: 0002

Highest Sup.Pack.: SAPKIPYL02

Short Desc.: Basis Plug-In (PI_BASIS) 2006_1_640

The OCS package name in SAINT is: SAPKINBC8A

The source system is a BW 3.5 system, and the target system is a BI 7.0 system.

I am not sure if the target version of the PI_BASIS add-on should be 2005_1_700 or 2006_1_700, but at the beginning of PREPARE, there is a statement:

"SAP UPGRADE CONTROL PROGRAM

================================

This is SAPup version 7.00/2 upgrade to release

2005_1_700 of PI_BASIS

700 of SAP_ABA

700 of SAP_BASIS

700 of SAP_BW

Target SAP system is BWS, MSSQL database

SAPup started in PREPARE mode."

However, I can not find any installation package for 2005_1_700 anywhere.

Please let me know asap if you require any further information.

UPDATE: I'm thinking maybe I should try to delete the 2006_1_640 PI_BASIS Add-on, as SAP says the following:

"PIB 2005_1_640 and PIB 2005_1_700 are integral part of SAP NetWeaver, a separate installation/delta upgrade is not necessary".

The only problem with this is that the only options I have in PREPARE in the IS_SELECT phase are:

- Upgrade with Add-on CD

- Upgrade with SAINT package

- no decision yet

There is no option to delete though

Any thoughts?

Regards,

Thomas

Hi Thomas,

I have checked the patch requirements of BI 7.00 (2004s) , it looks like till SP04 it simply uses PI_BASIS 2005_1_700 !

Looks like you are already on a higher version and I doubt that you can downgrade your PI_BASIS 2006_1_640 to PI_BASIS 2005_1_640.

I saw a note on SAPup correction note : Note 821032 - Corrections for SAPup release 7.00

Have you applied this correction before starting your upgrade, maybe that should help.

I am sure you have posted an OSS message to SAP explaining the condition and seeking their advice, if not then please do post a message.

Honestly I do not have a clue, but I am surely interested in knowing what happens to your systems.

We have similar setup and might be upgrading soon.. do let me know what happens.

Siddhesh

Hi

I have posted an OSS message about this issue, so fingers crossed they find a solution to this issue.

I have applied the latest SAPup version as per Note 821032 already, so I am running on the latest version of SAPup.

Thanks for you assistanse so far, and I will update this thread with any new information.

Thomas

I just found a note:

Note 153967 - BI Content Release Strategy

it contains the following statement:

Generally, PI_BASIS level in BI system is completely independent and decoupled of PI_BASIS level in the OLTP system. PI_BASIS is a layer which contains the Service API interface for data extraction. If you use OLTP system as source system for data extraction, you should pay attention to the PI_BASIS level (Releases, Support Packages). If you use BI for data extraction (as 'Myself' system) you have to take into account that PI_BASIS in BI has a correct level. PI_BASIS means Service API functions on Basis Releases 620 and higher. Service API on Basis releases lower than 620 is contained in PI releases or in CRM releases or in Industry Solution Releases directly.

With PI_BASIS 2005.1, there are some new features delivered, e.g. Realtime Data Acquisition (RDA). In the use-case 'RDA with SAP Source system' PI_Basis 2005.1 layer in the source system is necessary in combination with NetWeaver 2004s in the BI system.

It speaks about the use of PI_BASIS and its use in BI. Reading what it says I feel that you are already on a higher release of PI_BASIS and you do not need to upgrade it.

Is there an option to skip PI_BASIS upgrade in the PREPARE / UPGRADE stages.

I worked on Upgrades 3 years ago, so i don't recollect.

Siddhesh

Hi Siddhesh.

Thank you for your continued interest!

Unfortunately, there is no option (that I know of) that allows me to skip the PI_BASIS upgrade in PREPARE. I was thinking that maybe there was a "Delete" option in the IS_SELECT phase, which it is for ST/A-PI, but there are none.

If you find other things that might help me solve this, please let me know.

I will update this thread as soon as I have heard back from SAP regarding my OSS message.

Thomas

Hi.

The OSS message with SAP seems to give me little help.. the only response I get is to try the same thing I have done already...

Can anyone here shed some light in this issue?

Hi.

This issue was solved adding multiple mount points to the DVD holding the PI_BASIS upgrade package. I needed to refer to the DVD itself, and to UPGR_700 and DELT_700

DVD\

DVD\UPGR_700

DVD\DELT_700

Thomas
