How is EAN number dertermined

Hi ,

I want to know how does SAP determine which EAN number to use. I can see two EAN categories defined in confirguration and both of them has internal number range, but only one is triggered . Which parameter does SAP use for determining which EAN category to use.( liek sales org, material attributes, etc?
