What is the use of Material type in regard to SD.

The material type,will be used while defining the material

master.At that time,in Tcode:MM01,first screen we need to

mention,

ex:-engineering product,finished products,semifinished

product,etc.,

Tcode for defining material type is OMS2 OR OMSY OR MMPV.

FROM THIS ONE IS CORRECT,PLEASE CORRECT THIS.

By defining this, the system gives related fields,while

defining the MATERIAL MASTER.

Hi Mohammed Renu,

The entry of Material Type like "Finished Product" etc in the intial screen of MM01 (Material Master Record Creation) will have the impact on how the system generates the fields of entry for the material to be created. That is based on the "Material Type" you have entered the system will generate the "Views" and the respective fields in them. This impact is on all the modules. It is not only limited to SD. Hope you understood now. Reward points if found useful.

whatever the experts have said was right but i would like to addd a little more valuable information.

thru mat type v not only specify the type of material like finished product(FERT),trading goods(HAWA) or semi-finished product(HALB), boz of which system dislays different different vies to select

but also material type defines the general item category group (ex: NORM)and item category group (ex:BANS)which can be found under *basidata1 and sales:sales org. data2 views*, which play a vital role in determining the item category of the material which u are going to crate.

also mat.type controls along with plant in defining the checking group which plays a vital role in availability check

Dear Friend,

In addition to what has been added.

The material Type is used for Creation of MAterial MAster Records.

For generating the record the specification should be met for the material type.

Whether the material is a) finished goods

B)a Store Items etc....

When this is done the system automatically know what the created record is.

It automatically switches the fields which is required inside the records.

Such as Sales org1 ,Sales org2,GeneralPant,MPR1,2,3,4 Accounting Etc.

These Tabs has different feildsand the feilds gets active depending upon the material type.....

To make you little clear...If you are aware of the concept of Customer Account group.

It automatically selects the feild whcih are needed to create customer master record depending upon the customer Account group.
