Dear Venkat
Octroi is a kind of tax, levied on all goods that enter the municipal or city boundary limits for 'use', consumption or sale within the city limits'. It constitute almost 60% of the total revenue income of the City Corporation.
In India, only few states are following this system.
Thanks

In ancient times local authorities use to collect money from traders for providing safe passage through their territories. Some states in India till very recent times provided this authority to the local municipalities. The money collected (ie Octrai charges) at the octrai gate (which use to vary from city to city) was supposed to be for providing public facilities in concern city.

The state government levies the octroi charges when the product enters the state. This charge is applicable to certain states and fluctuates as per the Government regulations and we are unable to confirm the amount.
