xMII 12.0 : Work Bench track changes

Hello All,

In 12.0 all the developer tools have been retooled to be launched from a workbench. The workbench look and feel and functionality was borrowed from XI Repository. But We think one of the most import and most commonly used features of the XI Repository fwas not looked at for xMII 12.0 "Change List".

In XI Respository, when changes are made, they are put into a change list that needs to be activated or rolled back instead of having a popup asking for do you want to change or delete. CHange list enable us to track all our changes before they are commited .This feature enabled the developers to avoid fat fingering or be unaware of their actions.

In xMII12.0 though the workbench looks very functional, it leaves the developers helpless as there is not change list functionality that tracks all the changes.

Is there a way to rollback the changes in 12.0? or will this feature be introduced in the coming service packs?

Thanks for any feedback.

Regards,

Naveen

Currently the news from SAP is that version control would be introduced with the 12.1 release.Even Jeremy mentioned the same for your previous query. I do not have any details if this would be within the Workbench or outside & how much similar would this be to the 'Change List' functionality that you've mentioned.

With the current release one can make use of the Project Export functionality and export the contents of a project as a ZIP , thus maintaining the versions manually. In addition one should make sure to take regular backups of the NW database.

Naveen,

Just to clarify the look and feel was mandated not borrowed in order to keep a consistent development interface with other products/tools. The change list was not overlooked just not included in v12.0 it went under careful consideration along with other various features/enhancements and was eventually put into the v12.1 spec. We are aware of what it does just ran out of time to put it in place as the primary goal of the v11.5 to v12 move was to get xMII up and running on NetWeaver. You will see a variety of enhancements/tools with the release of v12.1. Take a look at John Schaefer's roadmap presentation on the Adaptive Manufacturing Summit 2007 web site. This will help to inform you on future releases.

As for rollback there is none built in and you are left responsible to maintain change history via filenaming convention and backup folders. I recommend using both along with exporting the backedup content on a periodic basis as well via the project export mechanism.

Hope this helps to clarify.
