In the netweaver Stack, XI comes in the process integreation layer...that means it connect shte process running in a aystem A to the process running in the system B, there process are mainly the busniess process.
XI faciliates the data flow between the various systems in your landscape in a more efficent and cost effiective wat, so when it needs to send the data from process A from SYSTem A to Process B in system B, how data if flowing from system a to system b is called collanbration knowledge, in simple words Mapping details, this is stored in the IR.
XI is a middleware by SAP, EP connects people over single portal, BW s=mainly storing data and XI for integreating the process.
