Hello D&G Forum,
I am working at a client that is interested in starting an archiving project. The client has been live on R/3 release 4.6c for 5 years and an upgrade to ECC 6.0 is being discussed. The client uses all of the major FI and CO components.
Here are my questions:
1. If we decide to archive in 4.6c, will the archive be retrievable in 6.0? ; If yes, are there any major considerations?
2. Should we wait till we upgrade? Please elaborate.
3. Can you recommend a website or whitepaper where I can further investigate archiving (I have access to help@sap).
Thanks very much.

Hi,
SAP ensures that data archived in current version is always readable by future versions. I would suggest that you start archiving in 4.6. Once you have archived the historic you can proceed with upgrade. Smaller database means that you will have lower upgrade time and lesser complexities.
You can find more info on Data Archiving in SAP Service Marketplace
Further you can read the book 'Archiving your SAP Data' from SAP Press which has all details you will need. http://www.sap-press.com/product.cfm?account=&product=H956

Hope this helps

Hi Mike,
Q1 & 2 > Yes you can archive right now and retrieve the data even after the upgrade is done.
Considerations:
1. Check the connection between the sap system and archive storage system
2. Activate the Infostructure in Archive Information system.
-Thanks,
Ajay
