What is alternative BOM, Where do we maintain this, Please explain

Eg: suppose if ur purchasing Computer you need this configuration. HARDDISK:120 GB, ram :1 GB capacity and MONITOR:CRT its one BOM for main material "Computer"

in this scenario wht happens when u raise sales order for computer then all the subcomponents r determines in sales order.

But another customer comes his requirement is HARDDISK:240 GB, ram :2 GB capacity and MONITOR:LCD

but the main material is "Computer" in scenario alternative BOM is helpful. when we raise sales order user enter "computer" in sales order and one selection list is avaliable for user from that list he can select another bom as per customer requirement.

config settings:in CS01 maintain in "ALTERNATIVE BOM" field 2 then system allows u to create two alternatine BOM for ur material.and remaining all the settings r same.

In standard, we can use some 7 types of BOMs. But from SD point of view, normally two types of BOMs are used. One is Production BOM and another one is Sales BOM.

Production BOM is the normal route where you define routing which will be done by PP module.

Sales BOM will be created by SD people where you sell one final product to two customers but with different BOM.

For example, material A contains 7 components which can be sold to all customers. But for a specific customer, if you dont want to sell all the seven components but you require only 5 components to go with the final product, then in that case, you create a Sale BOM in CS01 with BOM Usage 5.
