What role is the IDM product taking with regard to authentication, single sign-on and SAML?
As the standalone "MaXware product" I guess it does including these features and capabilities, but I have the impression that the Portal will keep this role in the SAP NetWeaver space. E.g. the SIM201 session at TechEd Vegas mentioned that EP 7.1 will be the only SAP product to act as a SAML Identity Provider. Is this correct?
Will IdM focus on management and provisioning, but leave authentication to the Portal?

Yes, IdM focus on management and provisioning.
You still set up your Single Sign-On environment based on the SAP Logon Ticket, e.g. around the the Portal.
You can call IdM from the portal using Single Sign-On based on the SAP Logon Ticket. (There are several authentication methods available in the IdM.) And of course you can use IdM to provision initial or productive passwords to target systems.
Kind regards
