asynch->synch->asynch without BPM

Is it possible to asynch->synch->asynch scenario in PI without BPM?

For example file comes in and xi routes to webservice or RFC and now I need to get the response from the synch call and write to jms or file.

Please let me know if this is possible? If so how do I configure the second part (synch->asynch)?
