RSS feeds don't work for me

Former Member

Tried setting up an RSS feed for the WebDynpro newsgroup. What happens is that when I click on the RSS button I end up with a new page of XML loaded into my web browser. The RSS news software doesn't get triggered.

This works with other sites that I use.

Ed

Hi

Assuming (from what you say) that your RSS feed reader gets automatically triggered via a browser 'helper' app, which is associated via a MIME type, I checked the MIME type returned with the RSS XML that you get when pressing the orange button.

Here's a snippet of the debug:

[dj@hadrian tmp]$ GET -Se https://forums.sdn.sap.com/rss/rssmessages.jsp?threadID=6613 --> 200 OK

Connection: close

Date: Mon, 17 May 2004 12:49:56 GMT

Server: SAP J2EE Engine/6.20

Content-Type: <b>text/xml</b>

It's 'text/xml'. Other sites might specify 'application/rss+xml', which might be the MIME type that's used to trigger your RSS feed reader. So perhaps you should check how your browser triggers the RSS feed reader - via what MIME type or types.

What MIME type an RSS feed should be has been debated long and hard; there is not really a simple answer, but IMO something specific like 'application/rss+xml' would be better than the generic 'text/xml' to help in these sorts of situations.

Hope that helps!

Hi Ed,

What I do is going over the RSS button with the mouse and right click <copy shortcut> and paste that URL into my RSS reader "Subscribe by Entering URL" field.

What RSS reader are you using?

Hope this helps, Mark.

Mark Finnern,

You have updated documentation on how to configure iView's to receive XML-RSS feeds?

Thanks.

Hi James

I'm not running a portal right now, but I seem to remember reading some documentation that said that you could configure a PDV to use an XML data source, using config like this:

PDVSourceType=XML

and then specifying the XML source URL, and the URL of a stylesheet to convert it into something readable by humans:

PDVXMLLink=http://...

PDVXSLLink=http://...

So perhaps you might want to look at PDV iViews ...

Hope that helps!
