Our client is currently running an Oracle database instance on a
Windows 2003 server. The SAP central instance and the dialog instance
are running on a seperate Windows 2003 app. server. They want to
migrate the Oracle database instance to AIX but not the Windows 2003
app. server. So, after the migration the Oracle database instance will
be running standalone on AIX and the SAP central instance and dialog
instance will still be running on Windows 2003 app. server. I have
never supported a mixed environment like this. I know that this is a
common practice for other software packages. I know BRTOOLS, etc will be the
AIX version. We would like to know if there are any "gotchas" we may
not have considered. Is there a recommendation for or against this type
of setup from SAP? All of the notes I have seen concerning
heterogeneous installation discuss this in terms of the central
instance being installed on the same server as Oracle. Some of the notes I have
already seen are 1067221 and 680617.
Hi Martin,
You may find some of the answers in the Installation guide. There is an option called distributed system in which you can install the database on a different host as well as the central instance, etc.

1. DB on AIX and all the rest on Windows would be called a distributet installation.
2. having the DB instance and the CI on AIX and the rest of the app-servers on Windows is of corse also distributed and at the same time heterogenious (from the application server point of view).
Configuration 1 is slightly easier to handle during SAP upgrades (no samba server needed).
Configuration 2 is more complex and less easier to handle during installations and all days administration (you will need a samba server or comparable CIFS functionality on the Unix Box in order to enable the windows app servers to access the common file system).
regards
Peter
