Hi,

If you are working on support project,you would be lead by your tool. Again tool worflow would be different for each client. If it is implementation again the same, you will get documentation based on that you have to work, and you need to book your timings how many hours you are working, How many billable hours you worked.

The project managers they will observe hours and whether you are meeting SLA or not.

every organization will be different.

For a project there will be a PM who will know all of the tasks that need to be performed. They would then speak with the team leaders to confirm who would do the work.

On a smaller scale a consultant might know the scope and manage their own time.

the key is to know your deliverables and to make sure they are done on time. If not inform a PM and provide an estimate of when it will be done.

If there are no projects going on and you work for a client, I guess you would be doing support, which would come in via tickets, and you would be assigned to work on it. Same sort of thing about time and notification when it is complete.
