SAP Landscape normally has 3- Tier system:
Development Server - Where customization takes place. Transport request is generated at this level & then first transported to Quality server for testing whether it meets the requirement or not. Once the requirement is met in Quality server then Request is transported from Development Server to Production Server (Actual / Live System).
Quality Server - Mainly useful for testing.
Production Server Actual / Live server, where the real transactions are created & posted.

r/3 means the sap was dovelped on the base 3 layers those are 1.production layer 2.application layer. 3.database lyaer.
landscape is stratagy of client means, the company which implemneting sap, what structure of sustem its following like, how many server they watn use, and how many client they want to maintain for each server.
it is not mandatory to follow the standard land scape to all companies. some companies will not hve sandbox server.
mainly we hve 4 servers1. sandbox server
2. dovelopment server
3. quality server.
4. production server
