hi could some one please clearly distinguish between an add-on and a plug-in
Support Packs as mentioned before are collection of SAP Notes.
According to the help of SAP, "SAP add-ons can be Industry Solutions, plug-ins, or customer-specific development projects.". This means that a plugin is one kind of the possible add-ons you can use in SAP.

I am explaining in simple words,
Plugin: Say you are using Windows Media Player, now you want to use a software called say "DJ Mix" which will give you the DJing effect in ur songs. Then what do you do? You install a plugin which facilitates use of DJ Mix in ur Windows Media Player. Same here in SAP.Ex: To integrate between SAP BW 3.5 and SAP EP 6.0 , you need to import the SAP Enterprise Portal Plug-In (PI_BASIS).
Add on:
Add ons in simple words are extra functionalities offered in your current SAP setup.
In case you are having a Newspaper company and you want to implement SAP in ur organization, you need to use the Add on: IS_Media apart from the available SAP set up so that you get the extra functionalities / business flows related to Media industry
Support Packs:
'Hot packs' is the old name, new name is "support Packs'(from '99). Both are same.In simple words, SP is the collection of sap notes(bug fixes) in one place.
Applying SPs are also called patching.
In simple words, Say the latest Basis SP available in market is SAPKB7001. Now say customers report 10 bugs in 5 months after applying this SP in their system. So SAP corrects this bugs individually in the form of SAP Notes and after sometime say 5 months it comes up with a new SP SAPKB7002(which will contain all the 10 bug fixes)
Cheers!

Hello Chandrakanth,
SAP offers a wide range of add-ons that you can use to enhance your standard SAP System.
These add-ons can be Industry Solutions, plug-ins, or customer-specific development projects.
