1)what type of characters xi should not allowed
2)what is the main use of receive step.

Hi Vishnu !
1) XI is UNICODE, so I think all type of characters are allowed.
2) receive step inside BPM are mainly use to trigger the process, to start it. You also can use this type of step to receive an asynchronous message during the process of the BPM that could play as an answer for a previously async sent message.

receive steps is most of the time is the first step in BPM, it is used for receiving the message from the sender side and to trigger the BPM.
It is also used for starting the syn-asyn bridge.

AFAIK, XI supports most of the ISO encodings.
