Dharmi,

iViews / Web Dynpros come into picture when you want to display the data from MDM. However, XI comes into picture when you want to consolidate and harmonize your data.

Consolidation : Get all the master data residing in different applications into MDM (via XI - its possible to get the data into MDM without XI as well) and manage the data centrally.

Harmonization : Once the data is managed centrally, change in the data, new master data needs to be distributed to the application systems. This is where XI is expected to play a role.

Currently, MDM can only read from file (XML / excel / IDOC XML's) and can only write into files (XML's, IDOC XML's, Excels) or it can read the databases (SQL Server, Access, Oracle). So if you are planning to do direct interaction with the databases or files you can do that without using XI.
