cProjects: global vs local versions

Former Member

What is the difference between global and local versions? The help documentation doesn't explain it to the extent that I desire. What are the implications of choosing one over the other? Will functionality be limited if I choose to use global versions?

We were going to use global versions because in DPR_SNAPSHOTS_CREATE in the R/3 system it appeared that this only pulled the global versions to select.

Thank you,

Wendy

Here is how SAP responded to one of our messages.

Regarding your issue about Global Versions and program

DPR_SNAPSHOTS_CREATE:

> Differentiation between global and local versions:

1) Global versions can only be managed by users that have the

appropriate authorization for the CPRO_VSHDR authorization object. This

authorization object enables you to specify the exact usage of versions

throughout your enterprise.

2) Local versions can be created by any project administrator and can beused for your own evaluation purposes.

> program DPR_SNAPSHOTS_CREATE:

The program selects/searches only global versions (see version search

help -> usage is always '1' , which stands for global ('2' would be

local), this is the standard system design.

Hi Wendy,

We have snapshot monthly versions created across all projects on the last day of the month. For this, instead of letting each user do this (some users are not so sincere to do that on the last day of the month... ah!!) we run a background job (scheduled on the last day of each month). And for this we use (and can only use) global versions. If you do want the system to create such versions (and instead want each user to do that), you have to have local versions.

Note: For the above mentioned case, global version can work the way local versions do (user can individually create the version at his their whims), but not vice versa.

Thanks...
