A very interesting question about SAP Portal

Hi!

I notice that every time when I try

http://service.sap.com

Immediately the URL will be changed to something like:

https://websmp203.sap-ag.de

1) Is websmp203 one of their Webdispatchers?

2) what are the benifits to do this?

3) how is it achieved?

Thanks! Points guaranteed.

HI CZ,

To answer your question, the functionality of redirecting the website could be handled in two way

1. You can do it thorugh the program, say in the first page ur url is calling a servlet. Inside the servlet u can redirect it to a different url/website.

2. In the web server, where the web site is hosted , it could be mention there to to redirect the url to some other url/server

That's the underlying architecture. If you are aware of any web architecture may be J2EE, it will be better to understand.

Now the main benifits of it is the simplisity...tell me one thing how easy it is for you to type service.sap.com....instead of that if you were asked to remmebr the actual url https://websmp202.sap-ag.de/~SAPIDP/002006825000000234912001E

that will be more difficult. Now also the thing happens like that the domain name/site name becomes very popular...now behind the scene they need to change the actual server from websmp202 to something else...they can easily do that without affecting the end user. You will not be able to realize what happen behind the scene.

Now you will find the server name/no websmp202 could be different,...that may happen due to load balancing...also it is haapen say u r accessing the url from India..it can identify the location and based on that and timing it can direct ur request to the specific server.

Hope this gives u a fair idea regarding ur query.

Thanks,

Atin
