Resolution sought ASAP ...
Hi Sanjeev,
Even i have faced this problem many a times.
You can stop the installation at that step.
You manually restart the instance through console.After the engine comes up,
"Continue with the old installation" option after that.It has worked many a times.
Bt,if the engine is not coming up ,you have to look at the developer trace files for the other possible errors.
Developer trace can be seen by right clicking on the server node in Management console.
allso log files can be seen in \us\sap\SID\JCxx\work (look for std_server.out)
reward points if helpful............

Thankx for the reply dear usha,
i chkd the developr trace and from there i came to know about the service file where the host file resides and there i changed the last line which was the combination of two lines.. i just separated the two lines and retried ... and it worked ...
thnx

I suppose you use a UNIX box and and system is giving this error while starting ABAP engine. I suppose you use memory less than 4 GB.
Can be a shared memory problem. Can you check the dev_disp and dev_w* traces ?
Try to manually start the system.Probably it would work.
Then use sapinst with option SAPINST_SKIP_ERRORSTEP=TRUE;
