A batch input session is a program that helps you in making massive changes. It's like a macro in office's application. You record the macro/batch input (a sequence of action in a SAP transaction) and after you modify the program created from the record (usually using the transaction SM35) inserting a loop in the program created. So you can act massively giving to the program a group of inputs that the program has to process in the same thing.

Batch input sessions enter data non-interactively into an R/3 System. Batch input is typically used to transfer data from non-R/3 Systems to R/3 Systems or to transfer data between R/3 Systems.

To reach the main menu of the batch input system, select System ® Services ® Batch input. Alternatively, enter transaction SM35.

Hi

You can schedule a particular transaction or a report in SAP to run at a particular time regularly. For example, you want to run invoice transaction daily at 10 pm which will take the data input from either an interface (via some table entries or a flat file etc) or generated with in SAP from other transactions (example: ERS - Evaluated Receipts and Settlment). By the time you resume your work @ 8 am in the morning, the invoice postings would have already been done by SAP. So, it is automatic. Some times, you may want to schedule a very time consuming report, to avoid performance issues during the working hours. Report output can be seen directly or you may get it send to the identified users via email. This is very useful and I have seen in every implementation we use it. Almost every one in SAP should know about this, no matter whether functional or technical. Look at the transactions SM35, SM36 and SM37

Reward points if it helps.
