Deploying SP12 stack not entirely successful

Former Member
0 Kudos

I am trying to apply SP12 stack to my SP6 system. I have previously deployed SP9 and have been operational for months.

Several components of my system were not updated by the SPS12 stack due to errors, and based on the file versions it seems many components were not updated by my SP9 deployment, either.

I am displaying a list of the development and software components that were not updated to SP12 versions in the hopes that someone can advise me how to 'force' the current versions of these components to install.

Thanks very much in advance!

When you undeploy component, you don’t reverse it to previous version, but completely remove it. Therefore you just uninstall the component using the SDM GUI and then install the retry the deployment of the whole SCA, using the JSPM or SDM.

Your observation about the SDM directory structure is valid, but please don’t delete files from there.

Would you happen to know how I should respond to the following error while deploying software component CAF?

Thank you for your kind assistance and words of wisdom - I have successfully updated all of the SP6 components to their SP12 versions.

If you are still monitoring this thread, I do have another question about an SP9 component named SAP_DEVINF. I redeployed this component along with SAPDEVINFF to update previous errors, and was able to complete all but the component tc/SL/CMS/PCS and what appears to be a dependant component tc/SL/CMS/WebUI. Do you have any knowledge of the usage of these items? If they control rarely used functionality, I may defer researching the error to a later date.

I am also attaching the error text (it is quite long, please forgive me):

I found the answer to my question in the following thread:

Usually the log files that you need to check are:

- JSPM & SDM logs. Usually you have the relevant SDM log in the JSPM log directory.

- Default trace files from the nodes. They are located in /j2ee/cluster/server0/log/defaultTrace.x.trc. You might use the Log Viewer service of the visual admin to see the default trace. Check the time stamp of the error from the JSPM/SDM logs and then see if around the same time the default trace was updated.

Note 1010640 talks about bug when upgrading from SP06/SP07 to SP11 or above. You probably don’t have the same issue, but the solution might still apply and is very easy to execute. Use the SDM GUI to undeploy cafUIptn~common and retry the deployment of the SCA. You could also use the SDM GUI to install the SCA file that failed.

Please note that JSPM is the only recommended/supported way of installing SP’s. There is order in which the SCA files have to be installed and the SDM doesn’t know about it. Therefore use only the JSPM to install SP’s.

Is it possible to undeploy a component from the original SP6 base installation? The current roadblock does seem to be the CAF SCA.

I did not have access to my original installation software until last Friday, but I have it available now. Should I copy the SP6 SCA file into my \usr\sap\trans\EPS\in directory, and attempt to deploy it using SDM?

I assure you using the SDM tool was not my first or preferred course of action - only after several unsuccessful attempts with JSPM did I try the older installation method.

On another note, it seems like each time I attempt to deploy a component using SDM, a folder is created by number and incremented in the SAP AG folder of each components' \usr\sap\J05\JC01\SDM\root\origin directory. Is that a valid observation? Is it acceptable to delete these unsuccessfully deployed folders, and their contents?

If there is a way to use SDM to force install these components, I would be very interested, because when I try to deploy them individually invariably I encounter the following error:

Caught exception during application deployment from SAP J2EE Engine's deploy service:

java.rmi.RemoteException: Cannot deploy application sap.com/cafUIptn~common..

Reason: Clusterwide exception: Failed to deploy application sap.com/cafUIptn~common. Check causing exception for details (trace file). Hint: Are all referenced components deployed and available on the engine?; nested exception is:

com.sap.engine.services.deploy.container.DeploymentException: Clusterwide exception: Failed to deploy application sap.com/cafUIptn~common. Check causing exception for details (trace file). Hint: Are all referenced components deployed and available on the engine?

(message ID: com.sap.sdm.serverext.servertype.inqmy.extern.EngineApplOnlineDeployerImpl.performAction(DeploymentActionTypes).REMEXC)

Remaining deployable components are skipped. I cannot seem to find any more descriptive information in any log or trace file. Perhaps I am not looking in the correct directory - do you know where such log files might be stored?

Hello Jennifer,

You could force the deployment using the SDM GUI. However it is probably better if we first see the reason why these components were not deployed. Could you archive the relevant JSPM/log/<date>_<time>/ directory and share it with me. There are many free services, where you could upload the file.
